It’s been several years, but I think I should move on from using. Irc and just use xmpp i also heard a rumor that the official haiku channel is going to be moving xmpp but what do you think should I strictly just use that now Instead of irc that is, unless the whole id law makes it completely impossible form a legal standpoint for both however, i’m not going to stop using something like open oscar though
Use XMPP if and only if it is usefull for you. There are no immidieate plans to move over to XMPP. We (that is Pulkomandy and me) do want to get Renga to a place where it could replace Vision for our usecase there. But if we actually do switch over remains to be seen. (otoh IRCv3 has also made great improvements, making the “need” for xmpp over irc much less IMO)
We could possibly replace vision with another irc client, if that’s the case, maybe something that actually ircv3 compliant or compatible
I don’t think there are any Haiku Native IRCv3 clients. But then again, nothing is stopping people from developing on Vision. It does have quite a bit of potential UI Improvements and IRC compatibility improvements.
Someone could also develop or create their own. I r c client i’ve been looking at cricket but there’s some weird quirks with it that I don’t like when I try to change my nickname, for instance, on a server, it still displays as haiku user for me. But everyone sees that I am actually referring to the nickname that I set i think konversation would probably be the best irc client to use on haiku right now in my opinion
We won’t include any qt applications in the default installation
Ah i see what about rust
JK now, honestly, I think you should work upon the default irc client that haiku comes with or have someone create a completely new irc client that is IRCv3 compliant
Not sure what the point would be to make a completely new client, using what is there and improving it ought to be much easier and faster?
True improving would be a better idea
Or here’s an idea we can use an oscar client, now that it’s easier to set up an open oscar server now or we could just use the client that was built by @nipos
For the server itself is apparently compatible with icq clients too apparently
BumbleBe,my OSCAR-compatible messenger app, doesn’t even support group chats yet.
Group chats are supported by the OSCAR protocol and may get implemented some day when I have more time again, but that sort of messenger is generally more meant for 1-to-1 chats.
I really wonder why you’re trying to reinvent the wheel here with IRC working perfectly fine for our use case.
For using an OSCAR server you’ll always need an account, same thing with most XMPP providers and Matrix, but with IRC you can quickly come in,ask your question and leave without having to go through a registration process.
And with IRC the bridges work great,so everyone can use the protocol they prefer.
You currently have 4 ways to join the official Haiku room: XMPP,Matrix,BeShare or directly on IRC.
Maybe some day a bridge to a OSCAR room can be added when the groupchat feature in BumbleBe is there, but moving the whole chat to another platform and locking out users on the other protocols is a bad idea.
Just trying to throw ideas around and i be like that sometimes
Renga is set up to offer an access without account. The downside is that access to federated XMPP group chats is limited to the ones on the same server (by the server I use currently, and I think as a spam control measure). Technically nothing prevents anonymous accounts, but it results in occasional spam waves.
I think it would be a good idea to have users create an account to help with the spam a little bit but the question is how many users are gonna use the group chat to start with and i still recommend people at lest sign up with a NickServ so some troll dose not steal there nick and start flooding the channel but to be fair seeing some one spam an irc channel is quite a rare thing to see now adays
We’re talking about XEP-0175 here,right?
I haven’t tried,but I don’t expect many servers to allow this.
I’ve never heard about that feature before you mentioned it and the XEP explicitly states that server softwares should disable it by default so that server administrators have to explicitly enable it if they want.
Also, the XEP states that the server should not allow anonymous accounts to connect to any remote entities (which is the same behavior you describe for your server).
Not saying that you can’t use XMPP without an account at all,but it’s not as common as with IRC and you probably won’t find too many servers that allow it.
Yes, that’s the one. You only need one server to offer this. Jabberfr does, and any server that offers a web chat interface (converse.js or similar) will likely also use this.
It’s a good way to get started with xmpp, but people will likely move to a proper account later on (just as with irc: you can connect without an account, but you likely want to register with nickserv at some point to use it fully)
