Install Software Valet package

Hi all - is there a way to make a Software Valet package work on Haiku 32bit? I have a couple of packages (GoBe Productive and an old SDK) I wanted to try installing, but I believe the last time I tried Haiku didn’t understand the package format and I didn’t go any farther at that point.

I did a search and all I could see is a few messages discussing the format.

Double click on package file should work fine. Haiku has LegacyPackageInstaller located in /boot/system/apps that can install/uninstall Software Valet packages. If package does not open, MIME type may be wrong, it should be application/x-scode-UPkg.

The files are place at non-packaged without link to the apps menu

Okay - so the BeIA SDK kind of installed, but Haiku doesn’t like Wagner, so it is pretty useless.

GoBe productive opens, but finished immediately and nothing is installed.

If you want to report bugs, you can do that at https://dev.haiku-os.org just use the search first to see if it is already reported. For example GoBe is a known problem with known workaround, you will find it easily with an explanation what happens and why. Please send patches if you can.
I am a bit hesitant about the BeIA devkit. I assume you used 32 bit Haiku, but we just dont know what “Haiku doesnt like Wagner” actually means. Care to check and open a ticket? IDK if Haiku really have to support it as it never released officially, AFAIK.

We don’t plan to support BeIA things in Haiku. It’s a similar but slightly different OS, and I’d say not that great at what it tried to do. So the experiment is interesting, but probably won’t get that much support from the Haiku team as we have enough things to do already.

What exactly happens? Missing symbol, crash or something else?

@X512 - it claims there is no networking and throws up the network preferences. My netbook is configured to use WiFi, so it might just be that? I only had a short time to test it. The other util that comes with the install is called “flashit” seems to open and display the UI. I’ve never actually needed to use it though so I have no idea if it actually works.

@PulkoMandy - yeah, this is all a big experiment. I think if there is a way to remove the read only file system and package management, I could probably get it to work, or if I could find the time to package it up it might work. But when creating a BeOS R5 VM is so easy and the SDK tools work out of the box with it, I don’t think it is worth the effort.

@extrowerk - I just tried installing the packages and didn’t look at any additional support articles. So I’ll see if I can make that work. This version of GoBe Productive is 2.01 IIRC, so it was (I think) the very last version they made in retail form. I don’t know if that makes the difference. It is one of the only bits of boxed BeOS software I have, so it would be nice to get it working.

This is good news, it do not need additional OS symbols to run. I think that it is possible to investigate how it check network connection and fix that.

@X512 it is definitely possible. My main interest is in getting the BeIA OS to run under emulation with networking and then to provide a few images so that people can play with it. If you want to look at getting Wagner running under Haiku, PM me and we can work out the best way to achieve that.

You may want to check “hakilo” in this forum, I think there is a post explaining how to build an Haiku install without packages (which of course you cannot use pkgman to update after doing it). It should get past this problem.

Hello. Regarding the Gobe Productive install issue, you can try to install it under BeOS, and then just zip the application folder and copy it to your Haiku drive. If I remember correctly, Gobe also install some additional translators that maybe you want to copy to Haiku too (old xls and doc translators).
