Yes, Haiku can do all that stuff. Not sure what simple games you’re talking about. It does support SDL & some OpenGL games but not Flash based. Go to Haikuware.com to look for games & applications.
Still, I suggest not using it as primary OS. Risky. Yes Haiku is fairly stable but you can still crash the system. Or changes can happen that affect stability or applications not working. Best used as 2nd or 3rd OS. Good to wait for late BETA release.
If you decide to use as primary OS then at least put your data on different partition to reduce risk of loss & backup important stuff to usb key, memory cards or DVDs.
Haiku is pretty much ready if you are somewhat computer savvy and should still be able to handle most tasks for most people. But it is still at its Alpha stage, which means go on at your own risks.
Haiku “should” be able to run most of your applications (games, etc). If something doesn’t work, you could emulate it at some point.
As far as primary use, I’m still running it in VirtualBox. One thing is for sure, Apple is starting to make mistakes I believe with their development. It will come to a point where Apple/Microsoft will restrict so many things it will turn off people (hopefully). While Linux is great, it’s still a bear for most to handle. Haiku is the perfect solution down the middle of the road. Open source, free, stable, fast, fun, and the list goes on.
It will be my main OS at some point. I just don’t see any other OS that offers this much while being open sourced and free. You can sign up to contribute if you are so inclined http://www.haiku-os.org/development
Thank you nick for you response . I am fairly used to with free and open source stuff . I use Debian Linux as my primary OS (win xp as 2ndry) . I will install Haiku on a separate pc though ,play with it and like to contribute in its development .
At the moment, Windows XP is my port of call when it comes to personal computing and I suspect it will be until 2015. Still Haiku is the OS I want to switch to at that stage (put NetBSD on my Handheld PC’s) once it has WEP encryption, flash and more external interface support.
I am in the same boat, so I signed up for programming class’s at my local community college to learn c and I will be taking c++ next semester. Just having a hard time getting my head around the language. I’ll get going on it though. This way I can work on the apps I need that i am stuck using winxp for. Soon enough winxp will be a dinosuar lacking support and that will push me to win7, which is a steaming turd.

I will miss ActiveSync with my PDA’s (I will have a PC dual-booting Haiku R1 and Windows 2000 just for that) and I will have to remove my apple junk (if iTunes isn’t released on Haiku).

<shameless plug>You may want to give the C++/Haiku Programming lessons I wrote earlier this year.

I will use Haiku as my only OS on my Acer Aspire One when WPA2 and YouTube is supported.
I will use Linux Mint on my other computers, because Haiku does not support their hardware.
I also think that Gnash skould be available through the “installoptionalpackage”-command. It’s easyer that way.
