 How about a Folder list (Like in windows explorer), as an option in the tracker ? it would be really good in easy navigation and browsing deep in to the folders…
 I dont know whether some BeOS fans will critisize my idea that it will destroy the simplicity of the tracker and will make it look like Windows…

People! Do not be so lazy to learn an existing possibilities of Tracker! The Tracker’s context menu is much more powerfull than this primitive Exp-like folder list. Just spend some time to learn it and you’ll never want to come back.
“New” OS - It’S a good occasion to kill such bad habits. =-)
Learning new ways to do things is ok for some people - other people want to feel comfortable and at home with their OS. Why not include a folder view for those who prefer it?

well iam quite aware of the possibilities of the tracker…
and the context menu browsing is the thing that i best liked ever since i met BeOS its really cool… 8)
I submitted the suggestion to improve the possibilities of the tracker and to make those new to BeOS feel comfortable…
May be a new idea of browsing can also be considered if anyone comes out with it…

This attitude in general seems very linux-like (more options is always good).
I’d much prefer to be forced to try something new. If I could have themed R5, I would have turned of the yellow tabs on day 1, now I can’t live without them.
Just because when some1 adds a feature they add the option to turn it off doesn’t make it a worthwhile change in all circumstances. Please lets try and keep things simple, not confuse the user with hundreds of options that all behave differently but rather stick with a few consistent, complimentary options that are well thought out and fit with the rest of the OS. If people wanted an OS that is like windows, they should keep using windows! We do things better round here

I tend to disagree with this view, providing more options does not destroy the simplicicty of an OS, it becomes more versatile and more user friendly by providing the users what they want. The taste and habits of each user may differ very much. So considering additional options would only satisfy them. But the simplicity is in the manner in which it is organised and presented to the user .
Iam not saying we need to replicate Windows. or there MUST be a ‘Folder list’. (it may or maynot be considered)
Think like this, BeOS supports FAT, NTFS(readonly), ext2 partions to be mounted. How would you say if anyone want to use FAT partitions should use Windows itself and not come here …!!
Users always ask for more, so providing them what they want will only benefit the community.

It seems we’ll never reach agreement on this point.
To me, one of BeOS’s great strengths is it’s simplicity. I can just see something insanely simple like Tracker with an options screen that has 50 different pages each with 100s of different options to emulate people’s favourite feature from filemanger x/y/z - yes, I know I can disable them and still be left with Tracker, but I would bet a few of the new options would be on by default, and many users would instantly press the button “pretend to be windows explorer” and never discover the marvel of well implemented simplicity that is the Tracker I know and love
It’s a hard thing to argue against, as any new feature suggested will be one that will become loved by a few users. I just really don’t want to get caught up in the trap of “any new feature is a good thing” as then I fear Haiku will just turn into another linux-like OS. This certainly applies to Tracker, where the right-click lists are a simple and effective means of doing most operations people use the explorer folder list for. When you REALLY need a folder view, there’s always something like Seeker.
As for the point of supporting filesystems, I think its a little invalid - there’s nothing wrong with interoperability (reading windows drives, loading windows bmp format), but that is a very different thing to copying implementations of functionalilty from windows apps when we already have a BeOS-way to do it.
We’re all lucky that Axel is the OpenTracker maintainer - the main tree is never going to be adulterated by the Windows-esque, KDE-esque faff thats entering the forks.

I 100% agree. Although that right-click menu has gotten awfully long…
