Haiku is pretty much alive!

As a user who as been following the story on/off since the OpenBeos days, I am getting tired of seeing posts like “Is Haiku Dead?”, overly negative comments to any bits of news providing indications of progress towards R1, or recurring comments about needing first more system developers OR need more application.

Yes, I wish that the pace of progress would be faster than currently experienced.

I have looked around and here is how Haiku appears to be in comparison to other OS recreation projects:

Haiku - Started 2001 (BeOS recreation with improvements)
Last forum post: today
Last stable release: R1 Alpha 4.1, 14.11.2012

ReactOS - Started 1996 (Windows recreation)
Last forum post: 17.09.2015
Last stable release: 0.3.17, 5.11.2014

OSFree - Started 1996 (OS/2 recreation)
Last forum post: ?
Last stable release: 0.04.7, 26.08.2011

Voyager - Started 1996 (?) (OS/2 recreation)
Last forum post: 12.10.2015
Last stable release: ? (does not appear to be a full stable release available)

MorphOS - Started 2000 (AmigaOS recreation)
Last forum post: ?
Last stable release: 3.9, 19.06.2015

As Haiku is a bit of an hybrid - attempting to maintain compatibility to BeOS and yet introducing improvements over it, a fairly comparable point of reference would be Syllable Desktop (formerly AtheOS):

Syllable - Started 1994 (as AtheOS) (inspired by AmigaOS plus other OSs)
Last forum post:19.12.2012
Last stable release: 0.6.7, 12.04.2012

So, all things considered, Haiku is pretty much alive.

Well said

Thanks, a great reminder! I looked at all of these years ago and noticed a few stopped their development.

What I like about Haiku, since the BeOS days is that I’m not looking for an OS to replace OSx, Windoze or Linux. I just want to have that unique OS that fits me, that appeals only to a few people who really get it and that is not part of the infernal trio. I almost hope it doesn’t get discovered anytime soon. We know what happens when OSs get too popular. They let us down after a while.

Good point. Complaining about lack of progress when there is obvious constant development is childish.

btw The MorphOS forum typically gets at least a few posts every day - notable events and software releases see much more posting. https://morph.zone/news/
