Haiku booting woes under VirtualBox

Felicitations! I’m having some difficulties getting my Haiku VM to boot consistently; currently, the thing only seems to boot when it wants to, which is about 6% of the time. Mostly it just hangs at the boot screen with all the little icons lit.

System information!

  • Mac OS X v10.7 host
  • VirtualBox 4.1.4 r74291 environment (latest version)
  • Haiku's VDI came pre-made from VirtualBoxes.org with Haiku R1/Alpha 3 preinstalled.
VirtualBox settings
  • OS: Other
  • Version: Other/Unknown
  • 512MB RAM
  • 32MB VRAM
  • PAE/NX enabled
  • VT-x/AMD-V enabled
  • Nested Paging enabled
  • Serial port enabled (read somewhere Haiku won't boot without this)
  • Default everything else!

Is there a fix for this, or is this standard alpha behavior? Thank you!

…and what about HyperV ?

AROS (Icaros Desktop) runs under it !

I got Haiku booting latest VirtualBox release, OS X 10.6

I went to virtualboxes.org and it said:
the image has been done from the nightly build HDD raw image"

And right there is your problem. Get your system running with an official Alpha3 version downloadable from this site before you start fooling arond with nightlies. download the ISO or anyboot format and set that in VB as your CDROM, create a virtual HD, boot from CD, format “HD” to befs, install.

Whoops, my bad! Somehow I completely missed that part despite it being conveniently located RIGHT NEXT TO THE DOWNLOAD LINK. Reading is a lifelong skill I suppose, who would’ve thought.

OK, so I installed Haiku to a virtual drive from the legit ISO (STABLE build), and I’m still encountering the same problem! Settings are unchanged. Any further help available?

Disable the serial port. Use one processor. I have PAE/NX disabled. Since you only have 512 MB ram, PAE/NX isn’t needed.

How do you disable PAE/NX?

Alright, everything’s working now! Sweet, I can finally enjoy Haiku! Thanks for your help, everyone!
