If you know ffmpeg, a good start would be forgetting about the Media Kit for now and making a small test application that extracts subtitles from a media file using ffmpeg and prints them to the standard output (or maybe find an existing ffmpeg sample which does something similar). Later on we can see how to get the data into our audio/video plugin framework, and then on to applications.
