Bootman replace in .:Haiku:. same or better to GRUB or LILO in graphic mode.
I disagree. Bootman might not be as pretty to look at as others, but it is simple, quick and easy to install. I have had many problems with Lilo and Grub which I don’t know how to fix. I could learn, but my solution has always been to install Bootman and the problem goes away.
Bootman isn’t needed. Nor GRUB, nor LILO. If Linux is installed then LILO and GRUB are probably already in place. If the main operating system is Windows then flexboot is all that is needed.
My hdd has been in a near constant state of flux when it comes to what OS’s are installed on it (considering macro time of course) and I have always used bootman whether BeOS was installed or not. It’s simple and functional, all I need.
Bootman is awesome … so simple to use. It would be sad to see it go …
i love bootman too
it’s saved me so much work at so many points in time
I use bootman on machines which don’t even have BeOS installed (boot off a CD, dump the boot sector backup to a floppy or usbkey). I can’t compute without it.
bootman? I need bootman! I Love bootman!

it would seem possible to build a bootman replacement from lilo or another opensource boot manager… there is even quite a bit of speculation that bootman is based off lilo

It was until R4.5. In R4.5 it was totally replaced.
The idea for bootman is:
- Simple to use, such as actual bootman.
- support for all popular Operative Systems.
- Graphic mode, for beautiful presentations of options.

Bootman already supports all possible Operating Systems, as all it does is shoehorns that partitions bootblock. I doubt Be ever intended you to use Bootman to load NetBSD, but I do with no problems…
Also, there is nothing wrong with the current bootman GUI. You see it for ten seconds once a day. If even. There is no point in having a fancy graphical mode.
i’ll go even as far as saying that i enjoy bootman’s OS selection screen. Aside from its sheer simplicity , it shows each OS entry as a different color.
As far as functionality, if the user selects an entry that is no longer a working OS partition, bootman returns you to the OS selection menu. No need to reboot the computer to try again as with “other” bootloaders.
The only feature i’ve longed for is support for removeable media – cdrom, floppy. IMO that would work great with the no-need-to-reboot for no-bootsector
You can simply not ruin things like bootman. It is a important part of BeOS, and
if it’s replaced with a bloated GUI one, you just know it’s not BeOS, and a part is missing.
I love my bootman (it’s pretty to watch too)!
