For Fun: What's the first thing you do when you install Haiku?

What’s the first thing you do?

For me is just a couple of small things usually in this order

  1. I change the keyboard layout to Linux
  2. Update the time to use Gmt
  3. Open File Types and set all text files to open with PE
  4. Add a shortcut to open Terminal with a hot key
  5. Set dark theme
  6. Install firefox and all my other favorite apps
  7. Open Filetypes and set Firefox as preferred for html

Hah. I’ve only installed Haiku a few times and for all but the last time what I did first was realize I’d messed up the disk layout and reinstall. :slight_smile:

The last time I installed it, the first thing I did was change the local username to “root” and add a few user accounts.

Terminal first! … then install everything I need plus QuickLaunch and set shortcuts for everything. Real men do it with keyboard only. :laughing:

Just as a little FYI, Terminal can always be opened with TeamMonitor and that can be summoned with ctrl-alt-delete :slight_smile:

This may be usefull if the other shortcut doesn’t work for some reason

And if you’ve got a Tracker window (the Desktop included) focused, you can open a Terminal in the current directory with Opt+Cmd+T (usually that’s Win+Alt+T.)

I’m not a daily user of Haiku, and have only installed it a few times on test hardware. However, I can’t get used to a menu (equivalent of the W*ndows ‘Start’ button) at the top of the screen, so I drag it down to the bottom-left. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m configuring the Tracker to use single window + navigator

I also using LaunchBox to have quick shortcut for Terminal, WebPositive, etc

As I did it numerous times (I like tinkering/breaking stuffs), I now have a script that, once NextCloud client is installed and sync is active :

  • further install a list of softwares (genio, libreoffice, icedove, etc)
  • copies saved/back-up settings files to :
    • set the active window border to the "tab yellow " color
    • change the regional settings and time-zone to my language/zone
    • change the tracker to single-window + navigator
    • ssh keys copied in the correct folder with correct read-ony setting
    • configure softwares (vision, icedove, etc)
    • etc

It is just a shell script that simply copies pref/setting files, and obviously the first point is just a pkgman command.

Quite boring/simple, but good enough to make full-reinstall painless.

In no particular order:

  • Tweak the font size (I tend to use smaller than default)
  • Set the display brightness
  • Enable focus follows mouse
  • Connect to the network
  • Install LnLauncher, vim, and the Neon Lights screensaver (and probably a few more things I’m not thinking of right now)
  • Set the active window border to yellow (same as the active window tab)
  • Deploy my ssh keys

Yea! I forgot to mention, if I have another Haiku already installed…after I do my initial setup, I will copy $HOME/config/settings/git, ssh, Mozilla, and cricket.

Alt+s = Terminal shortcut key for me. I’ve used this shortcut on all my systems since the early days. Hard to use anything else :stuck_out_tongue:

Gotta set up the terminal, install firefox, file associations, get libreoffice set up like I like, pull in some utilities, and generally I’m ready to go. +1 to smaller font sizes like Pulko, I’ve never been a fan of “embiggening” screen elements and fonts, I’m going to use my eyes while they still allow me to have high res and small fonts.

  1. Set up Wlan and lokale and some small ui changes (icon size … :wink: )
  2. Set up tracker to single window Mode and show navigator (or how its called in english :wink:
  3. install packages (like clipdinger and so on :slight_smile: )
  4. add replicants like netpulse and so on to the Haiku Deskbar

I’ll set up the Wi-Fi, download SpritzManager to automatically grab all the apps I favorited in my library, and then add the weather widget to the desktop.

  • I drag the Deskbar to the bottom to have a Windows-like task bar.
  • I customize Appearance preferences to have dark mode and darken the blue of the background.
  • I install Tor and hblock to improve privacy and get rid of ads before ever starting a browser.

How to Install hblock?

First install it the usual way: pkgman install hblock
Then run hblock as a Terminal command and it will automatically download and apply numerous filter lists.
