You’re correct, that would be the proper strategy. If the Bezilla guys would like, I can proceed with that strategy myself on behalf of the Haiku project - but I would first need to know what the desired end result is
Even changing the logo colors or orientation is definitely a violation of Mozilla’s logo policy and is specifically noted.

Well that is the thing, since he are dealing with a clause of a legal agreement, then it would be rather prudent (I think) to have some dialogue with the trademark holder over what can and can’t be done with the said trademark since every attempt to view the pacifies only give rather vague answers.

But again, asking others what we might like to see in the icon/logo requirements and taking a sit-down with a few legal minds to hatch out a plan/idea’s to take to Moz.
I don’t think anyone minds. In my case I prefer if others work on the visual aspects.

Haiku will eventually have its own native browser, likely based on webkit, which would probably be the appropriate time to design a custom icon.
Dont’t take this as flaming, but a native browser! firefox is the best browser the oss has to offer and coding an own browser for haiku seems to me as a wasteful and an unnecessary effort. Can you give me some info on what a native browser would bring to haiku that firefox already doesn’t have or couldn’t be added? Granted, I don’t know how much work it is to even maintain an up to date port of firefox with all of it’s dependencies compared to coding a piece of software that does essentially the same and works as well as firefox does.
In my opinion haiku should port as much as possible software from open unixes, the prime example being the already ported vlc media player + libavcodec.
My point being, don’t reinvent the wheel. If it doesn’t suit your needs as it is, modify it.

I’m speaking only for myself, but pursuing this would be a good thing.
As we all know, Firefox2 has or will reach it’s so-called “End of Life”, where the source tree becomes frozen. This is very bad, as no Mozilla products will build straight from cvs inside Haiku.
On top of that, there are numerous patches that have not and will not get landed in Mozilla’s tree. These patches greatly improve the quality of Mozilla 's products in Haiku (and BeOS for that matter). More than likely, these changes are categorized under the ‘serious modifications’ section of the trademark policy.
So, unless we receive explicit permission, I do not think we can use any of their trademarks, which include but are not limited to the use of any of their products names(Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, SeaMonkey etc…) and their associated graphics.
Here is an entry at the BeZilla blog pertaining to this issue. There is also a rough draft for the trademark license request.
just wondering if a tanuki could be a suitable mascot/brand for a native browser? it’s cute, it’s japanese and it uses a leaf to do transformations…
A native browser seems a better option to me, after all we are unable to use a firefox beyond version 2, thanks to the cairo graphics and other requirements.
After playing around in Icon-O-Matic, here’s some icons.
The ones on the right side were purely for fun

Nice, mmadia!
I like that fat monkey of xoferif2/5. Where did you find that? Or have you created that yourself? I could also imagine the monkey of xoferif2 bigger and leaning against a half-sized globe and with greens and browns for the continents and maybe some clouds.
Or maybe both monkeys throwing …something… at each other.
I’ve always thought that it was a Sloth.
There are two monkeys(It would make more sense that they are gibbons etc, and not sloths) on the debug icon, one debugging the other.

It’s the icon for the debug server.
All of these are Frankensteins, in that they were made from existing Haiku icons.
I probably won’t attempt to make any icons from scratch.

You (and stippi) definitely make beautiful icons
By golly! It’s a terrible, terrible waste to have such a nice sloth/macaque icon for a server only quite few users will see.
Taking such an elaborate and unique icon and re-using it is IMO bit problematic. It’s different if the object is massively altered, like a punk macaque or evolving bat wings and fangs. OTOH small things like taking the magnifying glass or the glasses and maybe slightly modify those, e.g. sun glasses, is OK and ensures consistency to a degree.
Besides, I’m also a big of your art, zuMikkebe!
hehe, Stippi said the same thing about that ( and others like mail daemon icon )…usually server icons are seen during shutdown process, and in haiku is so fast that few can notice them…surely I won’t propose to slow down the system to make those icons more visible
I made a tanuki icon, but not compliant to guidelines
hey zuMikkebe,
Are you planing to work on haikuizing the remaining server icons ?
The remaining beos style icons in haiku is a pet peeve of mine.

If I remember correctly are still missing the app_server, midi, media_addon and print server icons; the last is the one that requires the less effort (pick the printer icon and add an overlay hand)…for the app_server I did a sketch on paper about “painting a window” but I ain’t quite convinced, about media_addon the companion for the barrel organ ( the current media_server icon) is a monkey+cymbals, but there are too many animals, haiku is not a zoo!!
So another idea is to swap the icon from the media_server to midi_server and draw some brand new icons for the remaining two items.
Ops, I forgot the net_server…this is done, there is the icon from Stippi used for network status, we just need to remove the status light.
Wondering how much time number of people have to spend to do nothing. Like discussing FF icons in yet existing OS.
Sorry, for some rudeness, but I really wonder if there are some better ways to help Haiku and FF.
