Computers compatible with Haiku (OLD - pre-Beta2 list)

Introductory notes…

A while back, the now obsoleted Computer Compatibility List (OLD!) thread was started, and is now seriously out of date, which led me to start a new effort in February with the Computer compatibility list (old thread) thread. And up to now, I’ve been storing the new responses to a simple Google page called “Hardware List for Haiku” which I don’t think anyone can effectively see or use that well, and if people are taking the time to test and contribute, it’d be nice if they can see their efforts. And so, this thread was born. :slightly_smiling_face:

Where to find submitted hardware

Firstly, new hardware that comes in from the add Haiku hardware form is shared in this thread. But it’s also available at:

The Haiku Computer List page

This is a simple webpage, hosted by Google Sites, which lists submitted hardware into categories such as Desktops, Notebooks, etc. Also, please note the “Haiku Computer List” is an unofficial effort to help keep a current HCL with shared entries from the community.

The haiku-computer-list on GitHub

Text files containing submitted hardware (for entries that allow being shared on GitHub) are also available in the above GitHub repo.

All entries are freely accessible under the MIT License.

How to add new hardware…

A simple way to add new hardware is simply to use this Google Form, which guides you through several questions about your experience with Haiku.

Or, if you’re uncomfortable with using Google Forms, please paste and use the template below, then add whatever info you need over the sample info pasted below:

Additional notes (multi-line):

  • Had to use safe video mode to get it to boot past the splash screen.
  • Ethernet and WiFi both appear to work (I’m using ethernet and it works, wifi is listing networks so assuming it’s working).
  • Haven’t been able to test sound so it may or may not work yet.

Mobile workstations:

Apple MacBook Pro 15" 2.2GHz Mid-2007 (MacBookPro3,1)
Version: Haiku R1 Beta 1 (32-bit)
Rating: Somewhat okay (i.e. the display works, but there’s no sound or mouse)
Startup media: Internal SSD or hard drive (imaged or installed)
Started with: I do not know what this means
Boot options: Tried boot options
Memory: 6GB
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz (probably T7500 “Merom”)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 128MB
Additional notes (multi-line):

  • Does not boot Haiku from USB, you need to use a DVD drive or extract the disk and use another computer to install Haiku onto it. In my case, I must have screwed the boot loader stuff by having two SSDs with multiple partitions, so I ended up using a secondary SSD with an Haiku R1/Beta 1 32bit install image (written using dd) to boot the system (by pressing ALT and then choosing Windows) and the main drive to hold the partitions for both macOS and Haiku.
  • Sometimes, it requires two or three attempts before booting successfully, and turning on or off some boot options may help, but I could not find a pattern that would work every single time. Sometimes, the boot process seems to be frozen at the first icon, until I take out the cable of a USB mouse, then it boots.
  • It uses VESA Graphics on the full internal display resolution and Wifi works OK.
  • Sometimes, though, it looses wifi connection and can only get back online by rebooting the system.
  • Audio output did not work in the beta, but if you update to a recent (64bit) nightly build, you can get loud audio output on earphones or external speakers.
  • The internal trackpad seems to be a bit ““nervous””, clicking in small targets may be a challenge, and there is no secondary button nor scroll. Using an external USB mouse worked perfectly.
  • There is no iSight camera, but I believe the internal microphone works.
  • Keyboard layout for my language (Portuguese) is a work in progress, as there are some keys that need to be reconfigured.
  • There is no keyboard backlight. The system is very stable overall.
  • I did see a few kernel panics occasionally, but I have been able to work for long hours without any problems.

  • Both webcams (common and infra-red) didn’t work.
  • Screen works in native resolution (1920x1080) but I don’t know if it works in 120 Hz or just 60 Hz.

  • Wireless gets stuck on ‘Connecting’ after closing and opening the lid. A restart fixes it, but that’s not opimal, so I’ll provide any debugging help that’s needed for developers.
  • Right click does not work with the stock touchpad.
  • Also, I have not tested the DVD drive.

Sound card: HD Audio - Realtek ALC3202
Wifi card: Intel 7260AC FRU:04W3814
Startup medium: Internal SSD or hard drive (imaged or installed); USB media
Started from: No, legacy BIOS
Additional notes: Comes with a Windows 8 Pro license embedded useually, use this to update the BIOS, so you can install the upgraded wifi card that works with Haiku. USB bot works, installing to SATA SSD/HDD works. Except for ACPI Buttons/backlight control etc… 100% functional once the wifi is swapped. Browsers are usable but a little laggy, native and QT apps run well though on this 1.5Ghz quad core.

Lenovo x131e
Rating: Excellent (everything works… except maybe the camera or fingerprint reader)
Version: Haiku R1 Beta 1 (64-bit)
Memory: 8GB
CPU: AMD E2-1800 1.7Ghz dual core
GPU: Radeon HD 7340
Sound card: HD Audio - Realtek ALC3202
Wifi card: Realtek RTL8188CE (works with UEFI only must disable CSM)
Startup medium: Internal SSD or hard drive (imaged or installed); USB media
Started from: Yes, I started with EFI on (by choice)
Additional notes: The WiFi is the catching point on this one, it only ever worked for me with CSM disabled in the BIOS. the x140e + upgraded BIOS + swapped to intel wifi is a much better laptop. If you get one of these cheap it’s nice though only a dual core. Also I’ve ran 16GB of ram in these, the x140e probably supports 32GB.

Additional notes: The wireless card in this machine is not a stock one, however, the stock Wifi was also Intel, and also worked just fine. I’m really surprised at how well this machine works, I’m really only missing out on the fingerprint reader and the camera. Both legacy and EFI boot just fine on this hardware, I just use EFI as everything else on this machine is also EFI.

  • Wi-fi didn’t work, webcam didn’t work, and keyboard macros didn’t work (and a phone modem was present but wasn’t detected by the OS, but who uses dialup anyways lol).
  • Otherwise a great machine if you don’t mind the WiFi (and yes, I have tried installing the proprietary WiFi drivers).

Networking cards: Intel AC 8265 Wifi, Intel I211AT Gb LAN, AQUANTIA AQC107 10Gb LAN
Additional notes: Use fail-safe VESA driver for modern video cards. Some X399 motherboards have 10Gb LAN hardware requiring driver support.

Intel NUC
Version: Haiku R1 Beta 1 (64-bit)
Rating: Good (nearly everything works; e.g. the display, audio, ports, peripherals work, but no Wifi)
Startup medium: USB flash drive, External SSD or hard drive
Started from: Legacy BIOS
Boot options: Did not try boot options
Memory: 8 GB
CPU: Intel i3
GPU: Intel 620
Contributor: Anonymous contributor

Thin clients:

HP t5720
Rating: Excellent (everything works… except maybe the camera or fingerprint reader)
Haiku version: Haiku R1 Beta 1
CPU: Transmeta Efficieon
Memory: 1GB
Additional notes: it can boot Haiku from USB and do simple tasks, web browsing is possible but is pushing it, Netsurf would be fine for this PC. If you use a CF to IDE adapter you can upgrade the storage of this PC easily or put an IDE HDD/SSD in it. I would lean toward an HDD as it will survive disk swapping better. It is very low power… I intend to use it as an always on IRC box.

Where did the old list go?

The old computer compatibility list, with machines dating before Beta 1 was released, is in its original thread. All models contributed to that list have been placed in the last post of that thread and it should be locked.

To the contributor of the Acer Aspire One D269 info via the form, thank you! It should be added to the list above.

There’s one legacy (alpha 4) contribution which was shared on the form; I’ve updated the form and removed alpha 4 as an option as it is no longer supported by Haiku and is very old (although users are still free to submit whatever they want under Other). As such, this listing will not be listed up top with the recent hardware as “Haiku Vintage (Alpha 4)” was selected:

Model: Dell Optiplex GX 280
Rating: Somewhat okay (i.e. the display works, but there’s no sound or mouse)
Startup medium: USB (external) optical drive (CD/DVD media)
Started from: Legacy BIOS
Additional notes: Only needs a suitable video card to get something on screen. The rest all works.

Note to contributor: Thanks for your addition. Please give a recent Nightly or the Beta a try on your Optiplex, both of which still have a 32-bit edition.

waddlesplash has a list of computers tested with the beta… see here : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14lcdmBJ6N2-oxYNCW0ndVS8IdepCCXv6zG5VVdxWxKE/edit?usp=sharing

Also according to the following Intel NUC hardware works well (avoid high end Vega graphics models for now) Hardware for build

Just to summarize my own personal Hardware:

Lenovo x131e (filled out the form so removed description here).

Lenovo x140e (ditto)

Asrock Fata1ity gaming/ITX board + Ryzen 1700x + Vega FE + 16GB ram = only boots with 4GB limit enabled in bootloader + failsafe video, its rediculously fast though for a Haiku box. Built in Wifi works as it’s a compatible intel chipset, ethernet works.

HP T5720 this is actually a thin client with a Transmeta Efficieon + 1GB ram it can boot Haiku from USB and do simple tasks, web browsing is possible but is pushing it, Netsurf would be fine for this PC. If you use a CF to IDE adapter you can upgrade the storage of this PC easily or put an IDE HDD/SSD in it. I would lean toward an HDD as it will survive disk swapping better. It is very low power… I intend to use it as an always on IRC box.

Thank you @cb88 for your info! I’ve added both models to the main list above and should add them to the hardware site soon.

Now this is really exciting to see:

And I do wonder… now that I know there’s an official effort happening (I didn’t know this was here up until now), I wonder if I should redirect everyone to the list by @waddlesplash and/or merge the ‘R1 beta’ contributions listed above to that list? Hopefully, you guys will let me know!

In any case, coolness! Glad to see more hardware is being tested with Haiku.

Thanks @cocobean for your contribution to the listing; it’s been added to the list above.

I’ve tested USB and HDD boot on both those but not USB CD boot though I’m sure it would work… I must have selected the wrong radio button, would be nice if they were checkboxs.

Added new hardware via form to top post under custom configurations (again, thanks to the contributor):

Custom machines/boards:

Custom built machine, board, or Intel NUC, etc. (HomeBrew)
Version: Nightly 64-bit (hrev52394)
Rating: Somewhat okay (i.e. the display works, but there’s no sound or mouse) Startup medium: USB flash drive
Started from: Legacy BIOS
Boot options: Yes, I tried this
Memory: 8 GB
CPU: Ryzen 5 2400G
GPU: Radeon RX Vega 11
Additional notes: Only 4GB usable. Only VESA graphics. USB problems

Custom built machine, board, or Intel NUC, etc. (HomeBrew)
Version: Nightly 64-bit (hrev52394)
Rating: Somewhat okay (i.e. the display works, but there’s no sound or mouse) Startup medium: USB flash drive
Started from: Legacy BIOS
Boot options: Yes, I tried this
Memory: 16 GB
CPU: AMD A8-5600K
GPU: AMD Radeon RX560
Networking card: Realtek Network
Additional notes: Network speed too slow. VESA needed due to Ultrawide display. No sound through DP
Contributor: Anonymous contributor

Noted; I’ve changed this to internal HD/SSD and USB media (and have also added checkboxes to that section of the form).

@cb88, I’ve added in the two models you mentioned in an earlier post. Thanks for adding them! (I’d kindly ask though to please mention the Haiku version and your rating in the future, as I guessed for both: r1beta1, rating: good).

Added new hardware via form to top post under laptops (again, thank you to the contributor):

Wanted to also add that if any of the Haiku devs/admins, (such as @humdinger, @waddlesplash, @PulkoMandy, etc.) would like to view the latest submitted data or merge it with any other databases, the entries for the compatibility list are stored nicely in a spreadsheet here.

No the HP T5720 fully works… its just a low end machine relative to modern standards mainly in that it only supports 1GB max of ram.

Changed rating in the top list for the t5720 as ‘excellent’.

Added new hardware via form to top post under tablets (again, thank you to the contributor):

The Radeon HD 5450 works ok with an HP dc7800

@kenan1099, thanks for the info… but what version of Haiku was this with? How does the rest of the machine do with Haiku?

Thank you to Bartek and also the anonymous contributor for contributing your hardware to the list. It’s been added to the main post above.

Thank you for your contribution to the Haiku hardware list!

Thank you @Knez and @Aksenov for your contributions to the Haiku hardware list!
