Beta5 still lacks graphics acceleration. There is a prototype that is slowly being worked on for a Radeon HD series card but it is not in the Beta branch.
Thanks, Is there a list of supported graphics cards ?.
I’m just providing feedback.
There are no supported graphics cards for 3d acceleration.
Haiku’s main feature / attraction / charm is lost when applications hog cpu and memory.
Linux Mint Mate 21.2 have better optimization on the same hardware with firefox playing full screen video.
It’s not about optimisation, it’s about hardware accelerated video playback/decoding.
Hardware acceleration is not needed for video playback and decoding. You can play video in Media Player perfectly fine without acceleration on most hardware.
It’s definitely about optimisation, a lot can be done just on the CPU.
Is this in general or just for Haiku ?.
Linux Mint Mate 21.2 - FireFox, CPU is lessthan 10% and memory is about 1.3GB when playing 720p videos.
If it works in Haiku, it can work in other operating systems too
Funnily enough, a ported app, qmplay2 can often play back videos with a higer frame rate/less cpu utilization than MediaPlayer. So we have room to optimize aswell.
Accelerated video decoding is nice to save on battery in a laptop however.
I cant replicate this, with youtube (Falkon) running video(360p) in the background, using webpositive to browse this forum, when I scroll I never see more than 35-40%, and this system is really old (AMD FX based, “8 core” Opteron, DDR3 1333mhz) from ca. 2010.
So with 2 browsers running simultanously I am nowhere near 50% CPU
What are your system specs for this scenario?
