Anyone Using A Thinkpad Hardware Dock?

I had wrtitten about 2 different types of docking stations.

I suggested to create new category for old, classical docking stations, thats more than just a simple port replicators like USB or USB-C connected new type of “docking stations”.
I’m happy I could learn some USB “docking station” has power button as well … but can you detach it without handle it in OS ?
I mean if you unlock retention mechanism on a classical docking station, and detach laptop without any software clicks, and both the laptop and docking station works longer without problem.,
The laptop can be closed, and when you open the lid then just power up display, and if you attach again everything continues without docking station reconfiguring on OS level…
However, back to USB connected ones.

Such USB devices can be used with such laptops which has no docking ports on the bottom
like all Apple laptops,
or not the workstation grade or not business laptops, which ones also has no specific docking ports.

For example I always laughed when I saw on teBay as
Dell Inspiron 9100 was enlisted as compatible at classical Dell port replicators and docking stations.
Dell Inspiron 9100 had/has a special USB attached "docking USB port" but there were nothing on its bottom as a docking port.
Many seller had not took the fatigue to read carefully how this machine’s “docking” works.
It had a special USB connector which was a power connector as well twhen USB had not contained that generally. Present day it is not unusual the USB port has power feature as well.
However this USB port worked with an outer box, so this docking mechanism served as a limited one device attachehment. It could connect only one device at once. One optical drive or an another floppy drive or an IDE or SCSI disk drive, or a floppy alternative device.
It was not for printer or keyboard, mouse or anything else that is basically default for a port replicator. It cannot handle multi devices - against that it was connected via USB. Possibly as the port could drive one device – related to power. It had not required to use power cable to the device. It was given by the laptop itself via power connectors of this special USB port and the cable that connected to the box which contained the Dell equipped with storage devices/drives.
In Dell terminology in 90s they called it docking station, but it is such marketing nonsense like Starship for Elon’s new rocket and spaceship.

(Ha-ha! Starship !.. it will travel between planets and moos … for long months … NOT between STARS !.. Hilarious !.. )

Anyway, I hope I was clear now, why I suggested classical docking stations as they are different type of hardware than any type of USB connected port replicators and “docking stations”.

Kind regards,

You are not, to be fair. Sorry.

@KitsunePrefecture Don’t take it personally, but it is always very difficult to follow your posts. I usually tend to skip them altogether.
They are too long, convoluted, with casual use of punctuation. Not to mention the formatting, a mix of italic, bold and plain text that distracts attention from the content instead of reinforcing it. You tend to make flights of fancy, inserting sentences that add no value to the content and only distract. I would like to suggest adopting a more sober style, with short, circumstantial sentences. Readability would benefit enormously.

I do not take it personally - it is sure a generation difference.
I always forget newer generations learned/learns from short texts from a display. So they require direct short texts like wikipedia to comprehense their meaning…
More newer generations learns from videos - their imaginative capabilities are more lesser - they have to see the pictures that shows how would the dock port on the laptop how I dock the laptop on it.
How the usb port replicators can be used by any laptops, which has USB or USB-C port.
They have to see it.

I do not struggle to make sure everyone understand my explanations and think it is because it is explained in English.
I just always forgot what learnt about generations - it is not contempt from my side - it is just the recognition what about I always forgetting as a fact.

Me also terribly sorry if you can find disturbing my editing style … I just hope some who can follow against it - others just give praise for God to they not have to learn from books - it is not sarcasm now, but honest proclamation from me.

I do like long form text, and read a lot, but your posts are still convoluted and difficult to follow, and I usually also skip them.

One French author once wrote: “I’m writing you this long letter, because I don’t have time to write a short one”. Try thinking about it this way, spend a bit of time to trim your posts down, and keep them straight and to the point, intead of having other people try to decipher them. After all, the posts are written only once, but read many times, and so, itws the writing that should take more time, to optimize the reading (maybe I’m too software-minded with that way of seeing it). Be considerate of your readers, take time to write good text
